'O Jogo Bonito' (Portuguese) phrase, meaning 'The Beautiful Game' was actually popularised by the Brazilian professional footballer Pelé. In 1977, he named his autobiography 'My Life and the Beautiful Game' and since then the phrase has entered the language as a description for what we call soccer.

The Big Walnut Soccer Association consists of a two part system to accommodate players from ages 4-14 in all levels of skill.

1) The recreational league, known as BWSA, is a non-profit recreational league for children ages 4-14 in the Big Walnut area and surrounding communities. We have divisions beginning in Pre-Kindergarten and going through Middle School.

The BWSA is a volunteer organization and we are constantly in need of parents of younger children to join as coaches and board members and grow with their children and the league.

The BWSA hosts two seasons each year. The Fall Season runs from mid-August through October with the application deadline in early July, while the Spring Season runs from mid-March through May with the application deadline in early February. Participants must both register and pay the appropriate fee for each season separately.

2) The Freedom Soccer Club is our professionally coached affiliate travel program. Teams participate in the Mid-Ohio Select Soccer League (MOSSL), Buckeye Premier League (BPL), Ohio South State League (OSSL), and in the Midwest Regional League (MRL).

Freedom also offers a volunteer parent coached travel program. The available divisions in this program is variable and dependent upon coaches who choose to serve in the capacity required for a one year commitment beginning in June of each year. Teams participate in the Mid-Ohio Select Soccer League (MOSSL).

Our Mission

The Big Walnut Soccer Association (BWSA) is dedicated to the education of soccer and good sportsmanship in a fun, community environment. Players are taught the value of hard work, perseverance, teamwork and respect. We strive to create a positive, energetic learning experience for children and parents as well.


Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. According to FIFA's most recent Big Count survey, there are 265 million players actively involved in soccer around the world, roughly about 4 percent of the world's population. At least 3.2 billion people watched some part of the 2014 World Cup, with 1 billion tuning in for the final live on television. In comparison, approximately 115 million people watched the 2016 Super Bowl.

Please use the registration links at the very bottom of this page to register for all fall soccer - both players and coaches. If you would like to coach, there is a separate registration link. Please pay close attention to the registrations dates.

IF YOU REGISTERED IN STACK SPORTS LAST FALL: It is very important that parents and coaches register for 2019-20 using the same account they set up in 2018-19. This will allow the basic information (name, address, DOB, gender, coaches background check status) to carry over.

Regular registration is currently open through July 13th. Late registration is open through July 27th. Registration must be submitted by July 13th, 2019 to avoid a late fee. Applications received during the regular registration period are guaranteed placement on a team. Applications submitted during late registration will be assessed a $25.00 late fee per application and your child will be placed if there is still space available on a team. If you registered during late registration and we are unable to place your child on a team, we will refund your registration fee. It is very important that we receive all applications on time so we can find enough coaches, assign teams, and begin our season as scheduled! Late applications complicate this process. If payment is a problem at the time of registration, you must email us at and we will work with you on a payment arrangement.

We cannot accept requests for a certain practice and/or game days or the times they will be held. Practice nights and times are determined by the team coach. Once a child is placed on a team, we will not make team changes or offer refunds due to conflicts with other organizations they may be involved in! No refunds after August 2, 2019

Recreational League Fee - PreK (age 4 by 9/30/15 through Grade 6) is $105.00 per child if received by 7/13 and $130.00 per child if received after 7/13. (A family maximum fee of $275.00 will be charged for the recreational program ONLY IF the applications are received by 7/13. The family maximum does not apply to the Middle School League or the Select League.)

Middle School League Fee - Grades 7 & 8 (regardless of birth date) is $120.00 per child if received by 7/13 and $155.00 per child if received after 7/13.



Recreational League: Teams are re-drawn each fall season by random placement and experience level. Children returning to play in the Spring 2020 season primarily remain on the same team they were assigned to the previous fall. (You must still complete an application and pay the appropriate fee for Spring 2020). New players registering for Spring 2020 will be placed on an existing team that needs players or new teams will be formed as necessary.


  • Some age groups may be combined and it may not be the same combinations as the previous season! The age groups to be combined vary each year and are determined by the number of players registering in each age group. Typically, age groups are by grade: Coed PreK, K, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6.
  • BWSA will form separate girl's and boy's divisions if the numbers permit us to do so. If there are not sufficient numbers, some divisions will be co-ed. Which divisions become co-ed may vary each year.
  • All children entering the 7th and 8th grade must participate in the Middle School League regardless of birth date.

The MSL is a traveling recreational program consisting of teams that play against other MSL teams in our neighboring communities. The MSL is open to any child entering the 7th or 8th grade provided they are not playing on a select team. Once a team is formed, we will try to keep the team together, if possible, for the remainder of the time they are in the Middle School Program. Returning players will be placed on their previous team unless their application is not received by the deadline and the roster has been filled with new applicants. If a player decides to "sit-out" for a season and then return the next season, we cannot guarantee placement back on their original team.


Practices usually begin in mid-August depending on how quickly we are able to find coaches and set teams. Rec games typically begin the first Saturday after Labor Day and should conclude by the end of October. Most games will be played on Saturdays but there may be some Sunday and/or weeknight games during the season. Saturday games will begin between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. See note above**

Games for the younger age groups (PreK-3rd grade) and home games for the remaining age groups are typically played at Hylen Souders Elementary School, 4121 Miller-Paul Road, Galena. Other games for Grades 4-6 and MSL could be played in our neighboring communities. Games for the MSL are scheduled by the MSSA office and are normally played on Saturdays and on Wednesday or Thursday evenings.

UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT The recommendation to move to a reversible jersey has been approved by the BWSA Board. All players will receive a reversible jersey. In subsequent years, this jersey can be reused. Replacement jerseys will have a fee associated. Players must supply their own shorts, socks, shoes, soccer ball and required shin guards. Shoes may be cleated soccer, baseball, or all-purpose type; metal cleats are not permitted. Tennis shoes, while permitted for the recreational league, are not recommended. Tennis shoes are not permitted for the MSL. Short and sock colors may be recommended by your coach.

We are always looking for coaches. Please consider coaching your child's team. There is a separate registration for coaches and team administrators. Teams cannot be formed until we have enough volunteer coaches.

Fall 2019 Registration

BWSA Parents,
All youth sports are in an era where we are facing some significant challenges. I’m sure you read the headlines and realize that we are no longer living in a time when the best intentions can be assumed of everyone. New laws and rule changes designed to help protect children and raise the level of awareness of both coaches and parents alike are coming our way at a very fast pace. These laws include Return to Play(Concussion Law), Lindsay’s Law (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) and the new Safe Sport Act (Sexual Abuse). As a result of these regulations, the statutory requirements that are placed upon leagues become ever more burdensome. Additionally, leagues must keep all this signed paperwork on file in perpetuity. Our parent association, Ohio South Youth Soccer Association (OSYSA) has devised a system that helps us manage these issues and the additional regulations which will come our way in time.

OSYSA has created a registration system for parents and coaches which relieves member leagues from the liability of tracking and maintaining these records. Unfortunately, these services have associated costs. We work very hard to strike a balance between keeping recreational sports affordable and still collecting enough to pay for all of the moving parts that go into making this enterprise viable. That being said, we find ourselves in a position of needing to raise out rates for the Fall 2019 season as the latest requirements are now taking effect.

The new rates for Fall 2019 will be $105 for PreK - 6th and $120 for Middle School.  This includes some additional funds for field maintenance. Additionally, for the older divisions - 1st grade and up - we will be introducing a reversible jersey which can be used multiple seasons. What this allows us to do is warehouse more jerseys than we need in a given year (Fall to Spring Seasons) and gives us more flexibility in dealing with late incoming registrations. We won’t have to order jerseys based upon a specific number of players, sizes, colors, etc.

BWSA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and all of our funds go directly back into the program. We are responsible for maintaining 13 acres of fields year-round. In past years we have paid to expand the parking lot 3 times, install drainage (although this Spring has been a challenge) and create new fields. We have purchased a new main shed and have replaced the doors on the old shed which will be moved to the back to replace the very old metal shed. We also need to replace (re-run) a broken clay field tile which runs through the parking lot. This cannot be done until the season and tryouts for select soccer are complete.

We value our relationship with the community and want to make this a program we can all be proud to be a part of.
